Master's Commission

Special Guest: Remy Attig

Remy Attig grew up in the Assemblies of God church and joined Master’s Commission days before his 17th birthday. After years of self-loathing he left MC and the AG church at age 20 with no external support network. Remy, a queer man, has often felt that friends would judge him if they knew his history. To cope with the feelings of shame, he buried many of these memories and tried to forget them. He is telling his story now to heal, leave blame with his abusers, come out of the cult-survivor closet, and to feel proud of how far he’s come.

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

As he was about to turn 17, Remy Attig was keen to get away from his parents’ fracturing marriage, and ready for something to give his life purpose. The Master’s Commission program seemed like just the thing to set him up for a life of travel and spreading the word of God. Instead, it ran him ragged, instilled fear, built on his internalised homophobia, and set him up for unhealthy relationships and trust issues. In hindsight, he believes that the Master’s Commission was a cult.
